The Drakensberg is uplifting, energising, relaxing and exactly what everyone needs more of. Unless of course you’re spiritually dead. And even then, it’ll do you good. Durban, is a backpackers haven with its reliably warm sea and all its dedicated surf rats, Indian market, happening waterside bars and great music scene, is a city that’s always on holiday. What makes it so appealing to backpackers is that has a perfect climate and the Drakensberg mountains are a 3 hour drive away and Zululand with her games parks and real Africa only a 1 hour away. The Hottentot word for this place "Karoo" (a thirstland) perfectly describes this arid area of low rainfall, meagre vegetation and haunting rock outcrops.
It's a remote, moody and lonely - but absolutely extraordinary – landscape and any time spent here will have you touching parts of your soul you don't often access. The open plains of the Free State stretch between the Vaal River in the north and the Orange River in the south. To the east the land rises to the highlands and the mountains of Lesotho. This wealthy province boasts gold and diamond mines as well as fertile farmlands. The Garden Route is a favourite for backpackers and has some of South Africa's best backpacking lodges. Johannesburg is the starting point for many backpackers coming to South Africa. If you are looking to do a safari it is the best city in South Africa to go from. there is an excellent choice of backpackers in Johannesburg. This narrow plain lies between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains. Lesotho is a great place to go backpacking if you’re feeling frustrated by South Africa’s “unAfrican-ness” and you’re wanting to encounter traditional African lifestyles,there are some wonderful backpackers in this mountain kingdom. Limpopo offers a gateway into the Kruger National Park - not to mention loads of private game farms and beautiful natural locations. Its tropical vegetation and abundance of locally grown fruit and vegetables also make it a cheap area to travel in.
The name of the province has been changed to Limpopo, and some town names have changed. You should still see the old and new names together for a while longer though. This backpackers paradise is bordered by Zambia on the north-west, Tanzania on the north and Mozambique on the east, south and west, Malawi lies in the Great Rift Valley, which runs through the country from north to south. The coastline of Mozambique is one of the most beautiful in all of Africa and boasts some of the finest deep-sea game fishing that can be found. It is now the haunt of big game fishermen from all over the world and sport fishing is big business. This is one of the most beautiful areas in South Africa and well worth the trip - not only because of its rich wildlife and the Kruger National Park, but for the abundant and breath-taking natural wonders. Namibia means different things to different people. But there's no doubt that the common thread through everyone's feelings is based on the awesome natural phenomenon of the country. The vast tracts of unpopulated land that stretch forever. The incredible Soussusvlei dunes. The ghostly coastline. The harshness. And of course, man's insignificance. This small province is home to Sun City, Pilanesberg Game Reserve and the Magaliesberg mountains. Stretching from the West Coast across to Kimberley on the Free State border, this is the largest of the nine provinces in South Africa by far. Lying at the Southern most tip of Africa where the cold Atlantic and warm Indian oceans meet is a fertile stretch of land, surrounded on one side by sea and the other by majestic mountains, called the Overberg. The administrative capital of South Africa and home to most embassies, Pretoria is considered by many to be Jo’burg’s safer sister. Truth is, they’re like chalk and cheese.
Pretoria is home to the Voortrekker Monument and, by implication, Afrikaans culture. There are some major universities and a thriving alternative art and culture scene. Route 62 is filled with amazing backpacker lodges. It starts at Robertson and winds its way through quaint towns to just past Oudtshoorn. It is worth getting off the N2 and spending a few days exploring this amazing part of South Africa. The South Coast coastline is less dramatic than in other parts of South Africa, but there are plenty of great beaches and lots of good surf spots. It has some awesome backpacking lodges. The sunshine coast encompasses a beautiful stretch of the coastline that's lapped by the warm Indian Ocean, and so called because it offers more sunshine hours per year than anywhere else in South Africa. The main cities that are included are Port Elizabeth and East London and all of the towns found along this route. The backpacking hostels in Swaziland are amazing and well worth visting a few. Swaziland is also filled with backpacker adventures from Game drives to shooting white water rapids. A secret gem on the Garden Route with bird and animal sanctuaries, creative people and local art centres. Stretching from the West Coast across to Kimberley on the Free State border, this is the largest province in South Africa. And it’s not only diamonds that are found in profusion here. There are numerous places of stark natural beauty such as the Kgalagadi National Park, the Augrabies Falls, Namaqualand and the Richtersveld. It’s here that the enterprising San people lived. When the stars sang, they hunted eland across the sky. In those days, God was a person. Life here is dominated by the mighty Orange River. Moody, sullen and mysterious, it brings life to this desert area. Sometimes the river scarcely flows, at other times it floods.
But it’s a river of water, as opposed to the rivers of sand that surround it. Although the actual river mouth is geared up for visitors, magnificent Mother Nature can be found living wild everywhere else. The West Coast is wild, rugged, tempestuous and untamed. If you are looking for a wild backpacking experience in South Africa, you have found it.... The Wild Coast has some of the countries best backpackers.It is a wilderness where man is a part of the landscape, nor it's unordained boss. Rolling green hills are met by sky-sized bursts of cloudbreak and patches of brilliant blue, the hillsides littered with sheep, goats, cows and pin pricks of mud huts. The Cape Town winelands are situated on either side of the Hottentot Holland Mountains which lie to the north and east of Cape Town. They have a Mediterranean climate, plentiful water and fertile valleys which provide ideal conditions for vineyards and orchards to flourish.
There are a number of fantastic backpacking hostels in the Stellenbosch area. Most of the Stellenbosch backpackers offer great day trips and activities within the Winelands area. A tropical paradise island Due to the present political climate, most backpackers tend to stick to the Vic Falls area, so we have included Zambia with Zimbabwe as they both border on the Falls. Zululand is wrapped up in one province with all the sights and sounds of Africa.
Amidst endless fields of sugarcane, you’ll find game parks that teem with wildlife, exquisite beaches lapped by a warm ocean and a thriving African culture.
There are some fantastic backpackers in the area. A few places to check out backpacking lodges are : Hluhluwe, Eshowe and St Lucia. All cities listed with Coast to Coast(sorted alphabetically)top of page Addo has three backpackers. It is the best place in South Africa to see elephants close up. This is a great place to head for if you're finishing or starting a trip, or wanting a base to explore the Fish River Canyon. There are no backpackers here although there is camping. This lovely little fishing village is set against an backdrop of impossibly blue seas and whitewashed cottages. Meander down to the harbour and choose a fish fresh off the boats, or take a walk to the caves and shout something you’d like to hear a few times. Hot desert conditions and spectacular scenery. The bay is just half an hour from Durbs, has all the restaurants, cinemas and social paraphernalia you could need and is a lovely place to spend a few days. Banana Beach is aptly named for the profusion of wild strelitzia (banana) which are found growing locally. Once a gold mining town, Barberton has a colourful past. Barrydale is situated at the top of the Tradouw pass and is on the R62 Welcome to the heart of the Cape Karoo and the largest town in the arid Great Karoo
region. Professor Christiaan Barnard, a former resident, performed the world’s first successful human-to-human heart transplant, and is honoured in the local museum which houses a display of awards presented to him and a replica of the original heart transplant theatre. Situated on the N10 between Port Elizabeth and Cradock, this is a real country town stopover. The town lies in a valley in the Maluti Mountains. Betty's Bay is one of those places that grew up as a holiday home from home. there is a fantastic backpackers in town. Known as “The City of Roses” and a rose herself, Bloemfontein is a surprisingly beautiful city with an interesting history. The main attractions here are the Bloukrans Bridge, the world’s highest bungy jump and the beautiful surroundings Boston is located at the foot of the mighty Drakensberg mountains. it is also part of the midlands meander. Situated 25km north of Cape Agulhas, Bredasdorp is a centre for wool, grain and dairy farming and lying in the heart of the Overberg, you’ll certainly know that you are in the “bread basket” of Africa… This little coastal village lies just outside of Knysna and is a great place to relax and get closer to nature. This, the second largest city in Zimbabwe, has a strong sense of the colonial yesteryear. Bulngula is situated south of Coffee Bay and is the Wild Coast at its best. If you are offer the perfect holiday destination, you can't get much better than this. Bulwer has two backapcking hostels in it and lies at the foot of the Drakensberg monutains. Nestled in the heart of the Klein Karoo lying between majestic sandstone mountains cleft by spectacular ravines of vineyards and orchards, is the quaint town of Calitzdorp. The port wine capital of South Africa, it makes an enticing stop for quaffers. Other tops quality wines produced in Calitzdorp include Boplaas, De Krans, Axehill and the Calitzdorp Wine Cellar. Further afield lies the Gamkasberg Nature Reserve where the new protea Golden Mimetese was discovered.
27 kilometres from Calitzdorp is a gravel road that leads northwards to the famous Seweweekspoort with its unique oozing rock formations.
Visit the lovely stone church. In the church hall are 27 hand-stitched wall hangings illustrating the gospel according to St Matthew.
This is the perfect place from which to watch the sun go down - whether it's from the white sandy beach or one of the many bars or restuarants that line the beach front. There are no backpackers here. Cape Agulhas backpackers is set at the true southernmost tip of the continent. Is it really where the two oceans meet? Go there to see for yourself. Named after the patron saint of sailors, St Francis Bay was first discovered in 1575 by the Portuguese. It's become somewhat exclusive but still has one of the finest surf spots in the world according to King/surf bum Geoffrey and other surf rats. This area lies just above the city centre and is also known as the Malay quarter. Today it is a colourful kaleidoscope with hints of Cape Town's yesteryear peeping through the architecture. There are no backpackers here. Set against the magnificent backdrop of Table Mountain which dominates the skyline at all times, the Mother City is Southern Africa's most beautiful, and most visited city. Some of Cape Town's best backpackers are nestled here which is just above the Cape Town city centre on the slopes of Table Mountain and overlooking Cape Town and the harbour, these residential suburbs are fairly laid-back, quiet and surrounded by plenty of greenery, lush gardens and parks. Cape Town city centre is filled with backpacking lodges and if you are after the heart beat of Cape Town city centre then look no further and find a Backpackers in Cape Town city centre. Most places are a quick stagger to pubs, clubs and happenings..... Outlying areas of Cape Town Located on the N6, this is a good overnight stop between Jo'burg and the Wild coast or the Garden Route. The Cederberg is a wilderness area with some fantastic indigenous cedar forests, San rock paintings, magical waterfalls and bizarre rock formations. In winter, you'll find snow capped peaks and in summer you'll trade your soul for an ice cube. The Central Drakensberg is made up of Giant’s Castle, Injasuti, Champagne Castle and Cathedral Peak. It's a place that calls to your soul. Surrounded by mountains, Ceres is the centre of a vibrant fruit growing industry. The surrounding areas are also well known for their fine wines, so why not go on an overnight tasting trip in the far flung parts of the winelands? This is an beautiful mountainous area. Chintsa is supposedly named after the "crumbling" banks of its river during floods, the small town of Cintsa is split into two by the river and as it's one of the last towns before the Wild Coast starts, it already has some of the Wild Coast feel and beaches that run for miles and miles. We think that it's a lovely stop. Citrusdal is home, as it's name suggests, to a citrus growing industry. Nestling in the beautiful Olifants River valley between fynbos clad mountains, it makes a great base for exploring the area and everything it has to offer - such as hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, spring flower hunting and the art of pure relaxation. Lying at the foot of the Cederberg, Clanwilliam's biggest drawcard is the Cederberg Mountains. This is one of Cape Town's older suburbs which has a well developed entertainment and shopping infrastructure. There are no backpackers here. Well loved by weekend escapees, it's a lovely town on any other day of the week too. Unspoilt and undeveloped, Coffee Bay is a backpackers paradise with most people stopping off here on their trip up the coast. All you need is time… This is a perfect half way stop if you're travelling from Cape Town to Johannesburg. Although it's a dorp, it's well supplied with restaurants, pubs and friendly locals. Small, sweet and home to some serious satire. An interesting little one horse town. Durban is warm all year round which means that the backpackers are hot and there is always a vibe going at the backpacker hostels. East London is the largest river port in South Africa and is the gateweay to the Wild Coast The area from Manzini towards the border with Zululand. This is a surfer's (and beach lover's) paradise with the best left hand break in S.A. according to Surf bum Geoff. A good stopover between Zululand and the interior. Eshowe has a quiet, colonial feel to it that reflects graceful feelings of yesteryear. It’s almost as though time slowed down here and the town has not quite reached this century. This is a fantasic wildlife park that shows a different face with every season. There are no backpackers here although there is camping. This is a lovely little town in the heart of the Free State's cherry growing industry. 10 kilometres outside Hermanus. Nestled in the Drakenstein Valley, this is where the French first settled (and made wine) some 300 years ago. Franschhoek is noted for its many magnificent wine estates, the Franschhoek Vineyards Co-operative and the Huguenot Memorial and Museum. Botswana's capital city. Small fishing port on the Cape South Coast and famous for its Great White Sharks George is very close to Oudtshoorn, Mossel Bay and Victoria Bay, it’s a convenient backpacker stop over point. George airport is a convenient way of arriving to explore the Garden Route.The Outeniqua Tjoe - Choo train comes puffing into the station once a week. British soldiers called it ‘Gin gin I love you’. The name is Zulu and means ’the swallower of the elephant’.
Go here just to stay at Inyezane. Rocking surf, dune boarding, diving and plenty of hiking. Only 30 minutes from Cape Town's airport, these two towns offer mountains, wine and glorious sea. Cape Town Airport is about half an hour away and the joys of the wine route begin once you cross the highway and head for the mountains.
Graaff-Reinet lies between Cape Town and Jo’burg and is 300km from Port Elizabeth. The jewel of the Karoo, it’s an oasis of gracious old charm in the heat of its dusty surroundings. Apple, mountain bike and adventure country. Seeped in Settler history, Grahamstown is a real student town and when Rhodes University shuts for the holiday the town closes and goes home. Joke. But close enough.
Truth is, when you put enough students together, something fun always happens - so keep an ear open for what's on when you're there. This scenic little town lies in the heart of Mpumalanga's natural wonders and makes a good base from which to explore the area. Neighbouring the busy suburb of Sea Point, Green Point has much the same setting and vibe as Sea Point, overlooking the icy Atlantic seaboard and backing up against the mountain. Many backpackers make Green Point their home whilst visiting the Mother City. Greyton is rural tranquillity and quaint country scenes. There is a backpackers lodge in town. Principal city of the midlands area, Gweru lies on the main road between Harare and Bulawayo. Antelope Park, where you can walk with lions, is near here. Somewhere in Botswana Tucked away at the end of a dirt road, Hamburg is an enchantingly dilapidated little village that nestles on an exquisite estuary. The capital city of Zim. On the edge of the Northern Berg, this is a convenient stop over between Jo'burg/ Durban and Lesotho. 45 mins from the business centre of Johannesburg lies this oasis which has interesting markets and animal sanctuaries, as well as a good bit of adventure on offer. Lying on the banks of the Sabie River, Hazyview is only 16km from the Numbi Gate to the Kruger National Park, so it makes an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding area. Hermaus has a little bit of everything from long beaches, to whales populating the bay to a rocking nightlife...... Drakensberg Hluhluwe has three backpackers surrounding the park. The main attraction here is the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi game reserve which is an incredible piece of nature that teems with game. The big five are prolific. This is the wildlife hub of South Africa and close to the Kruger National Park. Hogsback is one of those soft places that somehow speeds up the passing of time. Dominated by the impressive Amatola mountain range, she has a charm and mystique all of her own. She's whimsical, teasing, enchanting and downright wicked. The Hole in the Wall has formed through millennia of crashing waves and constant erosion. It's about 15km from town and the entry point to the famous Chapman's Peak Drive. It's a little self-contained village with everything you need - restaurants, shops, auto banks and is close to plenty of good hikes and sunset drink slurping spots. There are no backpackers here. Originally a ferry crossing, now the crossroads between the Berg, the Battlefields and adventures Beaches, diving and surf. Beach resort on Zanzibar Islkand Until fairly recently, Jeffreys Bay was not much more than a couple of rocks that made good sunset perches. Then, in the 1960's, waves were discovered by local surfers and since then, the town has become increasingly popular. Especially amongst backpackers. What to know more about Egoli? An immense man made lake that divides Zimbabwe and Zambia. Tthis quiet little paradise is off the beaten track. Ain't much to write home about the town itself. But who cares when the surroundings are so divine… Nature freaks should get off the bus and do their thang. Sleep in a lovely old house, sample some delicious home made jam…and take some travelling with you. Some cities grow up on the banks of mighty rivers. Others in fertile valleys. Some sprawl around natural harbours. Kimberley is a city that has flourished thanks to an immense wealth of diamonds hidden in the ground. There is a great backapckers in town. Because of its isolation Kleinmond was an outlaws’ stronghold for some 200 years. Nestled between two estuaries and bordered by fynbos covered mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, Kleinmond is an appetising stop for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s a hikers paradise, and with consistently good swell, not bad for surfers either. This backpackers haven is the centre of the Garden Route. The town of Knysna sprawls around the Knysna lagoon whose entrance is guarded by two rocky cliffs called The Heads. Knysna is the hub of the Garden Route and this once sleepy village is now a bustling town. This town marks the border between Mozambique and South Africa. Kosi Bay is a unique and magnificently varied eco-system ranging between lake wetlands and marine coastal reserve. There is a great backpackers in the village. Meaning “the place where chiefs gather”, Kwabonambi is a little town in the middle of nowhere which makes a good base for exploration into the surrounding areas and its game parks, wetlands, rivers and coastline. This large fishing village is something of a birdwatchers' paradise. Set on the coast overlooking a beautiful azure lagoon, Langebaan is a watersports paradise. Leisure Bay is just a short drive from Port Edward, the gateway to the Wild Coast. A real beach holiday spot. Livingstone is situated on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. It offers an international airport and is the base for many of the adventure companies offering tours in the area. This is the heart of Swaziland’s Royal Valley and home to the Embo State Palace. Mlilwane and Mkhaya Wildlife Sanctuaries are near here. There are also two backpackers and an adventure centre here. A large area villages along the Transkei coast with breathtaking views Slap bang in the middle of the Diamond Coast, Luderitz is a sweet little town. Manzini is the country’s industrial centre and the business hub of Swaziland. There are two backpackers near Manzini. A peri-peri mix of Africa by the sea seasoned with take-away Portuguese traditions. Margate is the quintessential South Coast holiday town. Home to the Zimbabwe Ruins. The gateway to the Okavango Delta Maxixe in Mozambique is a busy harbour across the bay from Inhambane. This is the capital of Swaziland. There are no backpackers in the city. A wild gem on the wild coast. This small coastal settlement boasts great surf and fishing Messina is the most northern bushveld town in South Africa and just 12 kms from the Beit Bridge border post. This is probably the best base you could choose for exploring Maputaland, and area rich in unexploited wilderness where local people still live according to generations of traditon. Located 17km from the border to Botswana and close to a cultural village and game lodge, Mmabatho and Mafikeng are twin towns, now with one name. Montagu is situated on Route 62, the road to wine and roses, this charming little village lies snoozing in the embrace of the mountains. Morgan's Bay has some of the most dramatic high cliff scenery anywhere south of the Transkei Wild Coast. Mossel Bay is halfway between Cape Town and PE, this coastal town marks the official beginning (or end) of the Garden Route. There’s a wide choice of backpacker hostels, beaches and adventure activities. If you are looking for paradise with super cheap prices, yummy food and torquoise water. Stick on your backpack and go and explore the wonders that Mozambique have to offer. Mpande is surrounded by exquisite scenery, wild walks and a warm little rural village. Mthatha had a former name of Umtata, Mthatha is the Wild Coast's biggest city.Mthatha is a great place to get your shopping and banking needs if you are going to spend a bit of time on the Wild Coast. Matubatuba is just off the N2, this little town is a convenient stop over between reserves. it is located only 25km from St Lucia. Mtunzini is a quiet coastal town blessed by nature and with a colourful history. It is 132km from Durban and a great place to get into the heart of Zululand culture. Muizenberg beach is a surfer's paradise, with the best learner surf waves in the Cape.
You'll find the Google map to the Southern Peninsula on this page. Namaqualand, on first impressions, is a harsh, relentless, arid wilderness. Its few inhabitants are burned and dehydrated by the sun and scorching winds, but far from loathing the territory, they have an intense affection for it. A tranquil and quirky country village. Situated at the end of the Groot River pass, Nature’s Valley is surrounded by mountain, lagoon, sea and forest. This is the capital of Mpumalanga and the centre of an extremely fertile and beautiful agricultural region. This tiny archetypal Karoo village is tucked into a valley in the shadow of the Kompasberg Mountain, part of the Sneeuberg range. It’s best known as the home of the Owl House. Along the Atlantic coastline, heading northwards towards the West Coast and Namibia you'll find miles of beach…There's Google map here. The northern section includes the Royal Natal National Park and the spectacular Golden Gate National Park in the Free State. The area from the Bulembu border along Pigg's Peak road. The heartbeat of student life in Cape Town, spunky Observatory has an excellent local atmosphere and a lively vibe. It's jam-packed with snappy music and pool venues and has a gob-smacking choice of restaurants. This spectacular gorge is one of the South Coast highlights. Oudtshoorn was home to rich feather barons until the turn of the century. The collapse of the feather industry meant the area had to find other attractions in order to survive. And boy, has it done a good job of that! You need daaaaays to “do” Oudtshoorn. Nestled on the banks of the Berg River, Paarl is named after the enormous dome-shaped granite rock that overshadows the town. The town has played a significant role in the development of the Afrikaans language and culture and is home to the KWV wine co-operative – one of South Africa’s major wine exporters. Paddock is close to Oribi Gorge Free State town Paternoster and the adjacent Cape Columbine Nature Reserve are an easy drive from Cape Town - but far enough away to give a taste of true West Coast splendour. The commercial centre of Northern Mozambique and a beautiful sea side town. Phalaborwa is one of the hottest cities in South Africa. It is also a popular gateway into the Kruger National Park. The area makes a great base for exploring the Drakensberg and heading off into Leostho. There is heaps to do in the nearby vicinity with mountains, rivers and more offering themselves up for fun activities. Pietersburg is the capital of the northern province. The high places in the mountains around Piketberg once offered sanctuary to groups of San (Bushmen) and some fine examples of their rock art can still be seen in the area. Don’t leave the area without dropping into Pilgrim's Rest. There are no backpackers here though. Plettenberg Bay is a backpackers paradise. It was named “Baia Formosa” (Beautiful Bay) by early Portuguese explorers. Plettenberg Bay is now one of the Garden Route’s major destinations, primarily because the Portuguese weren’t far wrong. On the border of South Africa and Mozambique Ponta is a great place to start your backpacking adventure of Mozambique. Port Alfred is a charming little town with a graceful architectural integrity not often found in South African seaside towns. Port Alfred is a very quaint and unassuming place with heaps to do. Actually, we're very fond of it – and not just 'cos the beer's cheap. There is one backpackers in town. Port Edward is the last/first South African town before entering the Wild Coast, so it's a little more rugged than towns a few kilometres up the road, and yet a lot more developed than anything in the Wild Coast. Port Elizabeth is the 5th largest, and reportedly the safest, city in South Africa. It's surrounded by good beaches and has consistently good surf conditions.There are some fantastic backpackers in this city and if you are on the Baz Bus a stop over in PE is manditory. Port Shepstone has an excellent golf course, varied coastal and river mouth fishing, a tidal pool and sandy beach and is the gateway to Oribi Gorge. Once a busy trading port, Port St Johns nestles on the banks of the Umzimvubu River. Many people arrive planning on spending just a few days, and end up leaving months later. It's called Pondo Fever and it's a pleasure. A student town and home to the Aardklop festival. Everything above this lies in Pretoria city. This flourishing holiday resort has boating on the lagoon and river, protected sea bathing, fishing and a fine beach. This wilderness vastness (bounded in the north by the curve of the Orange River) offers hilly, rugged terrain distinguished by weird wind-sculptured rock pillars and spires. It's brown and bone dry except for the odd astonishingly lush greenness of irrigated lands. Set halfway between Cape Town and Knysna, this little town boasts some classic country attractions. Robertson lies on the Breede River Valley which is on Route 62. It is one of the longest wine routes in the world. Close to Lesotho and between Jo'burg and the Wild Coast on the N6 Sabie is close to the Sudwala and Echo Caves, God's Window, Graskop, Borkes Luck Potholes, Kruger National Park, a reptile park, forest museum and Pilgrim's Rest. This safe natural harbour is home to a navy training base and a hub for the fishing industry. Thanks to its encircling arms, the bay is not only super safe for swimming and a top spot for sailing, but the water is also warmed by the sun, making it lekker* to swim in, unlike the rest of the West Coast, which is generally a breath-freezing temperature. Scarborough is one of the last suburbs you’ll find before Cape Point. It's a very quiet with wonderful stretches of wild beaches, incredible mountain walks and an oddly shaped landmark known as Camel Rock. It takes about 45 minutes to drive into Cape Town from here. Close to great scuba diving at Landers Reef and Aliwal Shoal, this is a good stop for underwater enthusiasts. Situated on the icy Atlantic seaboard close to the Cape Town beaches Sea Point stretches along the beachfront and up against the mountain. It is densely populated with apartments, peppered with restaurants and bars and has a thriving nightlife. Straddling the N2 and in its turn surrounded by wetlands and sandwiched between the sea and the mountain, this is paraglider's paradise. The wonderful sand dunes you see in all National Geographic pictures are located here. There is no backpacker but you can camp. A malaria free wilderness area where the Big Five roam. This is where we've chosen to live, so it's gotta be groovy. It's the last village before Cape Point on the eastern side of the peninsula and very quaint. Not to mention romantic with its panoramic views over the Simon's Town navy and picturesque yacht basin. This is one of South Africa's premier dive sites. Walter Battis, the eccentric artist lived here, old fashioned roses flourish and the odd historic monument decorates the tree-lined back streets. A stunning golf course, great beach, snake park, croc park and one of the finest shoe-makers in the country.. The Southern Drakensberg is a beautiful area leading up into the Drakensberg and Lesotho. It includes Sani Pass, The Kamberg Nature Reserve and the Loteni Nature reserve. A name synonomous with mines and Apartheid Springbok is the largest town in Namaqualand proper and at the centre of the spectacular springtime flower show. This little village on the outskirts of Jeffreys Bay is architectually very pleasing with all the white washed homes having thatched roofs. It’s got everything you need to have heaps of fun but is surrounded by so much wilderness that you can walk out of a bar door and into a hippo...
The best time to visit St Lucia is in winter when it is cooler. The backpackers wine haven of South Africa can be found in Stellenbosch which is the centre of the wine producing region. Germany in the middle of the desert. Swellendam lies beneath some of the most spectacular peaks in the Langeberg range. The alternative inland route along the coast… Set on the banks of the Orange River, Upington is one of the larger towns in the Northern Cape and the centre of the local lucerne, sultanas, raisins, dried fruits, cotton, peas, sheep, goat and cattle industries. This small town lies at the heart of the northern Waterberg. Major conservation areas and game farms are located within easy reach, and there are a number of bush hiking trails and some excellent wilderness horse riding available. Used for touring organizations Victoria Bay is renowned as one of the world’s best surfing beaches and the waves here are often spectacular. This is one of the wonders of the world and well worth the visit. An airstrip for frequent flyers and a laid back spot for the rest of the world. Founded around a bubbling spring of clear water, and an important centre for sheep and wheat farmers, "the town of peace" is situated 13km inland from Saldanha and is one of the bigger towns in the area. This is the only town with real backpacker accommodation on the West Coast. Warner Beach is just south of the airport and the buzz of the city of Durban. This town marks one of the points where the mountains of the escarpment descend into the Lowveld. The Eland River Falls drop 228m into the valley below – hence the name Waterval Onder, which means ”under the waterfall.” This is one of the entry towns for the Kruger National Park. Wilderness nestles in the green coastal hills, framed by the Touws River lagoon on one side and miles of superb beach on the other. The beautiful Wilderness National Park protects the unique eco-system that makes up the surroundings. Windhoek is probably the best place from which to organise your backpacking trip around Namibia as pretty much everything either starts or ends up here. There are some fantastic backpacking lodges in this city. Known as the whale nursery of the East Coast, with the largest concentration of whales on the South African coastline, Witsand is at the mouth of the Breede River. It’s a peaceful town with excellent fishing. Worcester lies at the start of the R62 and is an excellent place to base yourself if you want to explore some of South African wineries as the Worcester Wine Route alone offers ten superb cellars.
